I am Mike Cotter, a Symbolic Still Life oil painter and Recomposed artist. My still lifes focus on Realism, depicting various Memento Mori scenes I’ve created, which contain mementos, insects, and geometric shapes that, when combined, reflect personal memories. Conversely, my Recomposed artworks intertwine elements from my past creations and new components, either digitally or physically collaged, creating a deeper narrative for the viewer. My Recomposed works have elements of realism but tend to be more abstract and textural. The spheres have become a common element representing life, spirits, or portals to a different time and place. While I have two completely different styles of work, they feed off of each other and drive my creativity for both.
Mike Cotter was born and raised in Arizona, drawing constant inspiration from its wildlife and the Sonoran Desert. He initially pursued fine art studies in Wyoming before earning his BFA with honors from the Institute of Art and Design in New Hampshire. Currently operating from his personal studio in Waddell, Arizona, Mike continues to delve into Memento Mori themed still lifes and Recomposed art.
